Leilani is a 23 year old mezzo soprano from Northamptonshire studying at The Royal College of Music under vocal professor Sally Burgess and vocal coach John Blakely. She graduated in 2015 with a First Class Honours Degree in Music from Royal Holloway College where she was a choral scholar for three years and was awarded the Dame Felicity Lott Bursary. In March 2016, she won First Prize in The Courtney Kenny Award Competition and was commended for her “appealingly rich sound” and “well chosen and heart-wrenching” programme of English Song.
A skilled concert performer, Leilani has performed many recitals both professionally and to raise money for her postgraduate studies. Recent performances include Berlioz Les Nuits d’été in a recital of French song and Schumann Frauenliebe und leben in a lunchtime recital at Peterborough Cathedral. Her solo repertoire with choral societies includes Bach St John Passion, Schubert Magnificat, Haydn Missa Sancti Nicolai, Bach Magnificat, Vaughan Williams Dona Nobis Pacem, Fauré Requiem, Rossini Petite Messe Solennelle, Vivaldi Gloria, Handel Messiah and Mozart Coronation Mass. Other solo performances of note include a performance of Jonathan Dove’s unaccompanied folk song ‘My Love is Mine’ at The Presteigne Festival in 2015, Rautavaara Vespers: Vigilia with The Choir of Royal Holloway at Christ Church Spitalfieds (solos and chorus) and Arvo Pärt Passio (Evangelist Quartet) with The Façade Ensemble at St James’s Sussex Gardens.
Leilani particularly loves performing on the operatic stage and was part of Opera Holland Park Chorus 2017 where she performed in Janáček Káťa Kabanová and Leoncavallo Zazà. Currently most suited to zwischenfach roles, she has recently covered the role of Hänsel in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel with Midsummer Opera and will be returning to the company in November to sing the role of Nora in Vaughan Williams Riders to the Sea at St John’s Waterloo.
Future engagements include the solos in Durufle Requiem and Tarik O’Regan Tryptich with St Albans Choral Society conducted by George Vass, and singing live from All Saint’s Church Fulham on BCC One on Christmas Day!
Leilani is very grateful to The Arthur Souster Charitable Trust as well as family and friends for their generous support towards her studies.
